This year’s African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies conference – taking place September 29 to October 3 in Cape Town – will feature representatives from some of the continent’s biggest LNG project developers. Speakers from Gazprom, Technip Energies, bp and ExxonMobil will lead discussions around Africa’s LNG future, outlining ongoing projects, upcoming investments and anticipated LNG export trends. As the premier event for the African energy sector, AEW: Invest in African Energies 2025 offers a unique platform for companies to drive natural gas projects forward.
Africa’s natural gas sector continues to grow rapidly, with the African Energy Chamber’s (AEC) State of African Energy 2025 Outlook suggesting that the continent’s gas reserves could support a fourfold increase in LNG exports by 2040. With LNG exports currently equating to 40 million tons per annum (mtpa), this growth would see this figure rise to 175 mtpa, with several large-scale projects driving this growth.
In Senegal and Mauritania, energy major bp – alongside partner Kosmos Energy – started production at the first phase of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) LNG development in late-2024, with first gas flowing in January 2025. The first phase will produce 2.4 mtpa and is on track to reach full operational capacity by Q4, 2025. A planned second phase will increase output to 5 mtpa. Dave Campbell, Senior Vice President for Mauritania & Senegal at bp, is expected to share insight into the GTA project at AEW: Invest in African Energies 2025.
Mozambique is also establishing itself as a major LNG exporter with projects led by energy majors such as ExxonMobil. As operator of the Rovuma LNG onshore project, ExxonMobil is targeting 18 mtpa in the country. Set to reach a final investment decision in 2026, the Rovuma LNG project – situated in Area 4 – is expected to start production in 2030. While faced with delays, the project developer remains committed to advancing the development of the project. Frank Kretschmer, General Manager of ExxonMobil Mozambique, has joined the AEW: Invest in African Energies 2025 conference as a speaker.
Technip Energies has been at the forefront of these and many more LNG developments in Africa. The company is providing front-end engineering design services for the Rovuma LNG project under a contract secured in September 2024. Technip Energies also spearheaded the development and deployment of the Gimi FLNG vessel – now operating at the GTA project. The vessel reached commercial operations in June 2025. As the company expands its footprint across Africa’s evolving gas market, it is expected to play an instrumental role in driving LNG exports for the long-run. Technip Energies’ Vice President for Upstream & LNG Dominique Gadelle as well as Managing Director for Mozambique Julien Larour are speaking at AEW: Invest in African Energies 2025.
Russia’s state-owned gas giant Gazprom has also been expanding its presence in Africa and is set to support emerging markets as they position themselves as LNG exporters. The company signed a deal with Tanzania to explore and produce natural gas, aligning with efforts by the country to accelerate gas monetization and development. During AEW: Invest in African Energies 2025, Sergey Tumanov, General Director, Gazprom International, is expected to outline the company’s investment strategy in Africa.
“Global investment will serve as a vehicle for gas monetization and development in Africa. Projects led by the likes of bp, ExxonMobil, Technip Energies and Gazprom are expected to transform the continent’s LNG market, creating jobs, powering economic growth and positioning the continent as a major global supplier,” states Tomás Gerbasio, VP Commercial and Strategic Engagement, African Energy Chamber.
AEW: Invest in African Energies is the platform of choice for project operators, financiers, technology providers and government, and has emerged as the official place to sign deals in African energy. And DooweGas is also going to be a major player and participant on this platform.
