Why are Global LNG Prices Dropping in 2026?

Why are Global LNG Prices Dropping in 2026?

The global energy map is being redrawn, and for the first time in a decade, Nigeria is holding the pen. If you’ve been following the gas market, you know that 2026 isn’t just another year—it is the year Nigeria moves from “vast potential” to a global “gas powerhouse.”

At Doowe Gas, we’ve been monitoring the pulse of the industry, and the latest reports confirm what we’ve suspected: Nigeria has officially reclaimed its spot as the primary destination for energy capital in Sub-Saharan Africa. Whether you are an investor, a “gaspreneur,” or a consumer, these shifts are about to change how we power our lives.

The global market is about to witness the largest supply wave in history. Analysts at Bernstein predict that by 2026, global demand for Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) will hit 441 million tonnes per annum.

The Problem: While demand is growing—mostly driven by Asia—supply is growing even faster. With massive projects in Qatar, the U.S., and Nigeria coming online, the market is shifting from a “Sellers’ Market” to a “Buyers’ Market.”

The Agitation: For Nigeria, this is a double-edged sword. While lower prices are great for downstream companies and consumers, it means our upstream projects must be world-class to remain profitable. If we don’t increase our capacity and efficiency now, we risk being left behind as global prices dip toward the $9 per mmbtu mark.

The Solution: NLNG Train 7 and the Race to 30 Million Tons

How is Nigeria responding to this global price pressure? We are building our way to the top. The $10 billion NLNG Train 7 project on Bonny Island is the cornerstone of our survival and growth strategy.

What is the current status of NLNG Train 7?

As of late 2025, the project has reached a staggering 88% completion. Despite global supply chain hiccups, we are on track to boost Nigeria’s production capacity by 35%—moving from 22 to 30 million tons per year (MTPA).

Why does Train 7 matter for you?

It isn’t just about exports. This expansion is driving:

  • Job Creation: Thousands of Nigerians are being trained and employed in high-tech engineering and construction.

  • Local Capacity: The project is a “classroom” for Nigerian talent, ensuring we don’t just host these projects but lead them.

  • Energy Security: More production means more domestic LPG (cooking gas) availability.

From “Gridlock to Greenlight”: How Nigeria Won $5.3 Billion in Investment

For years, Nigeria struggled to attract serious cash. Between 2015 and 2023, we captured a measly 4% of African energy investment. But the tide has turned.

In 2025 alone, Nigeria secured $5.3 billion in upstream capital investment. While the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa saw an 18% decline in energy spending, Nigeria’s investment soared. We now account for 38% of all major project sanctions on the continent.

How did we do it?

According to the Presidency, we moved from “gridlock to greenlight” by:

  1. Eliminating Rent-Seeking: Making it easier and cleaner to do business.

  2. Attractive Gas Terms: Offering the most competitive investment frameworks in Africa.

  3. Data-Driven Reforms: Benchmarking our systems against the best in the world to ensure we are “investment-ready.”

The UAE Partnership: Powering Your Home and Business

The final piece of the puzzle fell into place on January 14, 2026, during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. Nigeria and the UAE signed the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

This isn’t just a diplomatic handshake; it’s an energy engine. The UAE is now a confirmed supporter of:

  • Gas-to-Power Projects: Finally addressing Nigeria’s electricity needs by using our own gas.

  • The $25 Billion Nigeria-Morocco Pipeline: A project that will eventually link Nigerian gas to the heart of Europe.
