Nigeria’s Cooking Gas Milestone: Why Local Supply Hit 87% in 2025 (and What It Means for You)

Did you know that almost nine out of every ten cylinders of cooking gas used in Nigeria today are produced right here at home? For the first time in our recent history, we are successfully breaking free from the expensive cycle of importing what we already have in abundance.

At Doowe Gas, we’ve been watching this shift closely. It’s not just about big numbers and refineries; it’s about how “Made in Nigeria” gas is finally stabilizing our energy future. Whether you are a home user or a business owner, the 2025 data shows that the era of relying on foreign shipments for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is coming to an end.

The Problem: Why Were We Importing Gas We Already Had?

For years, Nigeria faced a strange paradox: we have one of the largest gas reserves in the world, yet we were importing nearly half of our cooking gas. In 2023, about 47% of our LPG came from international markets.

This dependence was a major headache for everyone. It meant that whenever the Dollar went up or global shipping was disrupted, the price of refilling your cylinder at the local plant would skyrocket. We were essentially paying foreign workers and foreign refineries to process our own resource and sell it back to us.

The Agitation: How Import Reliance Impacted Your Pocket

Relying on imports didn’t just affect prices; it weakened our energy security. Every time we used scarce foreign exchange (FX) to bring in gas, it put pressure on the Naira, making everything from food to transport more expensive.

Economists, like Prof. Wumi Iledare, have long argued that the real value of oil and gas isn’t in pulling it out of the ground, but in processing it locally. Without local refineries, we were losing out on jobs, industrial development, and the stability that comes from owning your own supply chain.

The Solution: The 2025 Local Production Surge

The game changed completely in 2025. Led by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and NLNG Limited, local production surged to meet a staggering 87% of domestic demand.

A Month-by-Month Look at Our Progress

Throughout 2025, local plants consistently pumped out thousands of metric tonnes to keep Nigerian kitchens running. From 3,200 metric tonnes in January to a peak of 4,500 metric tonnes in July, the consistency of local supply has been a breath of fresh air for the industry.

This milestone proves that domestic processing is no longer just a “good idea”—it is an economic reality. By processing gas locally, we retain value, create employment, and ensure that our energy supply isn’t at the mercy of global politics.

Beyond the Kitchen: The Rise of CNG and Auto-Gas

The gas revolution isn’t stopping at your stovetop. According to the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (PiCNG), we now have over 100,000 vehicles and 4,600 tricycles running on CNG across Nigeria.

With 379 conversion centers now active and over 6,300 technicians trained, the goal is to have one million gas-powered vehicles on the road by 2027. This move toward “Auto-Gas” is helping many Nigerians find a cheaper, cleaner alternative to petrol.
